RR is right: as more jobs disappear, more people will be looking for an alternative to the lifer politician. However, I hardly see it staying with the libertarians in the long-run, because the libertarians are not in the business of creating well-paying jobs.
Neither are democrats apparently.
Its hard to say what will happen. Schiff and Paul may not have any real success and it'll be a moot point. If they don't, I think there will still be a void to fill politically and I don't see anyone else trying to fill it.
Why, do you think that populism and Marxism have disappeared? If things get really bad, I see reason why they wouldn't return in a different form.

Neither do I. If things get bad enough Nazism, or some bastardization of it could come back as well. I don't see the countries which are growing economically heading in either of those directions though. The west will have a political void that could be filled with any destructive extreme, but who will care in a world centered around China?
Specifically in regard to the US> The most politically active, and fastest growing base is the liberty movement (or whatever you would prefer to call it). There are no leaders promoting Marxist or Populist values which are doing anything serious to mobilize people at the grass roots level.
