Horrible. The costs of electronics come down because they are made by wage slaves in China. WHAT A FUCKING STUPID MAN PETER IS!

Why does the cost of laser eye surgery come down?

Chris said...

It came down because they want to make a profit from more people. However, it is has not dropped as dramatically as electronics, nor will it. It still costs 4000 USD+ for two eyes! And it has been almost 20 years!

4000 USD? I can get mine done for $2000 CDN....

For two eyes?

You do realize that Health Canada regulates laser eye surgery in Canada, right?

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/med/surgery-chirurgie-eng.php

The very fact that the Canadian government pays for non-cosmetic laser surgery and subsidizes and regulates it is reason enough for the Canadian fee being lower; that is, if the price you quoted is for two eyes.

"Health Canada regulates the safety, effectiveness and quality of medical devices imported and sold in Canada, including devices used in laser eye surgery. This is achieved through a combination of a pre-market review prior to licensing, and post-market surveillance of adverse events after licensing. As part of this work, Health Canada monitors complaints about medical devices sold in Canada, and communicates safety information about medical devices to health care professionals and the public.

The price is for 2 eyes. Health Canada and the majority of insurance does not pay for cosmetic laser eye surgery. That is why prices have come down.

Then why hasn't the price of 2 eyes not come in the United States, which is much less regulated? I found prices for 4 thousand USD.

Josh said...

I don't live in the US. But Rand Paul (who performs laser eye surgery) continuously says that laser eye surgery has come down in price steadily every year since he started performing the surgery.

Chris said...

Just because Rand Paul says it does not mean it is true.

Again, every source I find lists a high price from the United States.

Josh said...

The point isn't if the price is high or low, but whether or not the price is higher or lower than last year, the year before, the year before.

Chris said...

The price isn't lower. It is still 4000+.

Josh said...

How much was it 5 years ago? 4 years ago? 3 years ago?

From DocShop.com:

Your LASIK eye surgery price can range anywhere from $499 per eye to $2,500 per eye.

And they tell you to be very wary of low prices, because there are a lot of shitty doctors and absolute quacks out there. Moreover, the 2500 quote is for the OBSOLETE procedure. I don't know about you, but I don't want anyone to go near my eyes for 400 dollars or to perform an obsolete procedure.
