Quote - H. L. Mencken

The aim of public education is not to spread enlightenment at all; it is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States, whatever the pretensions of politicians, pedagogues, and other such mountebanks, and that is its aim everywhere else…. Their purpose, in brief, is to make docile and patriotic citizens, to pile up majorities, and to make John Doe and Richard Doe as nearly alike, in their everyday reactions and ways of thinking, as possible.

This is the biggest pile of garbage you have posted yet, Josh. The aim of public education was to educate farmers and workers well enough so that they could function profitably in capitalist society. That was its explicit aim at its inception; obviously the importance of education has changed in the 30 years.

"it is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to down dissent and originality."

The quality of individual dissent and originality BEFORE public education was exactly the same, minus education. Education has allowed that dissent and originality to start from a more advanced point. For example, being able to read and do basic mathematics make the modern innovator superior to his non-educated pre-public education predecessors. Moreover, the constitution was written by the elite, not middle class or lower class individuals, so what "dissent and orignality" you are talking about I don't know. No where in the public education system is propaganda taught.

Finally, and this is no small point: Dissenters and original families have been given the right to attend private institutions if they want to. If the aim of public education were really to make everyone into political drones, don't you think all private education would have been eliminated? Oh yeah, that's right! All education downs dissent and originality!

*sigh*

They are being taught to respect the presidency, not Obama. Other president have done the same. The schools are not obligated to participate.

This is fear mongering pure and simple.

Those kids are being taught to chant left-wing talking points after repeating "Barack Hussein Obama" over and over again.

If this isn't an effort to "to make docile and patriotic citizens, to pile up majorities, and to make John Doe and Richard Doe as nearly alike" I'm not sure what is.

And those "leftist" points are? I can't tell what they are saying other than Obama's name.
