Ayn Rand on Businessmen vs Unions

Today's "liberals" consider a businessman guilty in any conflict with a labor unions, regardless of the facts or issues involved, and boast that they will not cross a picket line "right or wrong." Consider the evil of judging people by a double standard and of denying to some the rights granted to others. Today's "liberals" recognize the workers' (the majority's) right to their livelihood (their wages), but deny the businessmen's (the minority's) right to their livelihood (their profits). If workers struggle for higher wages, this is hailed as "social gains"; if businessmen struggle for higher profits, this is damned as "selfish greed". If the workers' standard of living is low, the "liberals" blame it on the businessmen; but if the businessmen attempt to improve their economic efficacy, to expand their markets, and to enlarge the financial returns of their enterprises, thus making higher wages and lower prices possible, the same "liberals" denounce it as "commercialism".

Nope. There is very good reasons for liberals denouncing the companies historically. Remember, this was written in the 60s, at the beginning of union power. Corporations were still posting record profits. But before the companies and corporations were forced to pay good wages, it was a continual struggle, which means there is no surprise that liberals act the way they do. The recent moves to Mexico and China further justify their classic position.

You've always told me union power started in the 30s...

Corporations were still posting record profits? They do today as well.

The difference between today and the 60s and the 30s is the income gap has grown at extreme rates; which never happened before the 30s.

I'm not suggesting unionization is the cause of the income gap, just that it fails to solve this problem.

The cause of the income gap is the Federal Reserve.

Yes, but by "started" I mean it was coming to a head in the 30s, then there was the war, and in the 50s and 60s high wages due to the mainstream unionization of major industries and various protections under the law. This was the beginning.

"The cause of the income gap is the Federal Reserve."

Garbage. The cause of the income gap is the movement of jobs to China where they pay an average of $5900 USD PPP>

Yes, it has absolutely nothing to do with easy cash these corporations have which they can use to over pay each other.

Also...not so sure why what the average worker in China has to do with the wage gap in the US.
