Essays that attack other authors, but provide not quotes by that author, are intellectually dishonest and downright dangerous.
Both parties are republican, Josh. And both are against welfare state. They are both financied by the capitalist class and are both, slowly, dismantling the New Deal state. That is why we can say that Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were Republicans: their actions spoke lounder than their political rhetoric.
I would never even think to call either party republican. Though they are not very liberal either. They are a whole other monster.
If you look at the philosophical definition of "Republican" they fit.
What is the philosophical definition of republican?
Someone who believes in republican government, a republic.
Once upon a time the Republican party was called the "Democratic-Republican" party. That should make you pause. It means that both modern parties are republican.
Or democratic.
No, "Democratic" came first, which means it was an adjective that modified "Republican".
